The Monkey King is a 2023 animated fantasy action comedy film directed by Anthony Stacci and written by Rita Hsiao and writing team Steve Bencic and Ron J. Friedman. The film is based on the first seven chapters of the Ming Dynasty classic novel Journey to the West. Jimmy O. Yang voices the titular trickster, with Bowen Yang, Jo Koi, BD Wong, Jolie Huang-Rapaport, and Stephanie Hsu in supporting roles.

The Monkey King was selected as the closing film of the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival, had its world premiere on July 30, 2023,and was streamed and released by Netflix on August 18, 2023. On December 7, it was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.

In October 2017, Oriental Dreamworks, now known as Pearl Studios, announced a film with Steve Bencic and Ron J. Friedman as screenwriters, but it did not come to fruition.It was later announced by Netflix on May 20, 2021, with Pei-ling Chou as producer, Stephen Chou as executive producer, and Anthony Stacci as director. Jimmy O. Yang, Bowen Yang, Jolie Huang-Rapaport, Jo Koi, Long Yuan, Hun Lee, Stephanie Hsu, Andrew Pang, Andrew Kishino, Jody Long, James See, and BD Wong were selected to voice characters in the film.

The Monkey King Movie Story

One night, a monkey is born from a stone on a high mountain, and the Jade Emperor becomes worried. He orders the child to be killed, but the Buddha appears before him and tells him to leave him with a task to fulfill. The monkey finds a group of other monkeys, but is unable to adapt due to his unruly nature. One of his escapes results in a feared demon bursting out of his mountain hideout and snatching one of the boys in the troupe for food. The monkey is then banished.

To prove his worth, he undergoes training to fight the demon. When he feels ready after many years, he confronts the demon, but his training proves ineffective and another child is kidnapped. To obtain a more suitable weapon, Monkey dives into the sea kingdom of the Dragon King, who is about to wipe out all life on the world’s surface with a glowing pillar. The Monkey communicates with the pillar, transforming it into a staff and escaping. The Monkey returns to the demon’s cave, defeats the demon, and saves the child. At the suggestion of a grateful group, he crowns himself King of the Monkeys, but the eldest of the group warns him that his staff can only be used by a god, so the new Monkey King resolves to kill 100 demons and thus earn the right of the monkeys to become a god.

The Monkey King Movie Review

This is an acceptable adaptation of Legend of the Monkey King. The graphics and action sequences were great. The character designs were ok, nothing special. However, I would like to point out that this action and adventure movie is aimed at a younger audience. As a result, some of the funny jokes seem boring, while others are a little funny. The Monkey King was also a selfish madman, but his lack of charisma made him an unlikable character rather than a real villainous anti-hero. Lin was a typical boring sidekick, which was disappointing as I was hoping to see more character development. Also, the legend of the Monkey King could have been explained a bit more as it could have been confused with the end of the series for those who don’t know it.
