Turning Red is an American animated coming-of-age film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is directed by Domee Shi (in her feature directorial debut) and produced by Lindsay Collins. It is written by Shi Cho and Julia Cho with a story by Shi, Cho and Sarah Streicher. The film is Pixar’s first film to be directed solely by a woman. The film stars Rosalie Chan, Sandra Oh, Eva Morse, Hae-in Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching-Ho, Tristan Aleric Cheng and James Hong. Set in Toronto, Ontario in 2002, the film follows Mei-ling “Mei” Li (Chen), a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who is cursed with a genetic curse that causes her to transform into a giant red panda whenever she feels strong emotions. Director Shi, who previously directed the short film Bao (2018), developed the film based on her experiences growing up in Toronto. In October 2017, she pitched three concepts to Pixar, including Turning Red, and development began in May 2018 when Shi was announced as the feature film’s writer and director. Several Pixar animators visited locations in Northern California to gather inspiration and visual references. The design and animation were inspired by anime works. To capture these anime influences, hand-drawn 2D animated effects were added to Pixar’s 3D animation. Turning Red took four years to develop with a budget of approximately $175 million, making it the fastest Pixar film ever made. Ludwig Göransson composed the music for his first animated film, while Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell wrote original songs for the film.

Turning Red Movie Story
In 2002 Toronto, 13-year-old Meilin “Mei” Lee navigates life with her strict and protective parents, Ming and Jin. She helps manage the family temple dedicated to her ancestor, Sun Yee, while striving to meet her mother’s high expectations. Mei hides her true passions, like her obsession with the boy band 4*Town and her crush on Devon, the local convenience store clerk. After an embarrassing public confrontation with Devon orchestrated by Ming, Mei is mortified.
That night, she dreams vividly about red pandas. When she wakes up the next morning, she discovers she has transformed into a large red panda. Trying to keep her new secret, she quickly learns that her transformations happen when she’s overwhelmed with emotion. Although she reverts to her human form, her hair remains a striking red, prompting her to wear a touque to school. Ming suspects Mei might be experiencing her first period but soon learns the shocking truth after an incident with the school security guard, where Mei transforms out of sheer embarrassment and rushes home in tears.
Ming and Jin reveal that the ability to transform is a hereditary trait passed down from Sun Yee, who used it to protect her family and village in times of war. However, in modern life, this power has become both a blessing and a curse. To manage it, Mei must undergo a ritual to seal the red panda spirit within a talisman during the upcoming lunar eclipse, which is only a month away. When her friends, Miriam, Priya, and Abby, discover her secret, they embrace it enthusiastically. Mei learns that focusing on their friendship helps her control her transformations, giving her newfound confidence as she navigates her unique challenges.
Turning Red Movie Review
“Turning Red” is hands down one of the best films I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching—truly a masterpiece of filmmaking! The characters are some of the most beautifully written in fiction, and I genuinely wish I could be friends with them in real life. As a huge fan of red pandas, seeing them on the big screen filled my heart with joy and brought tears to my eyes. The animation is absolutely stunning—it’s the best I’ve ever seen, and every movie should aspire to this level of artistry.
I believe little Mei Mei should be the lead in every film moving forward. This movie surpasses “Encanto” and every other movie out there! I find myself wanting to experience it all over again. Since its release, I’ve watched it non-stop—15 times and counting—and I have no plans to stop! I’ve even gotten my family to watch it, and if they didn’t enjoy it, let’s just say I had some strong words for them.
I would do anything for this film and would love to meet everyone who worked on it. Honestly, it could have been 11 hours long, and I would have cherished every moment! If I could, I’d give it a billion stars out of five. I’m even thinking about getting a little Mei Mei tattoo on my neck and a panda one on my lower back.
