Three days into their mission in the “Black Pit,” high-frequency direction finding intercepts a German transmission, leading the Greyhound to identify a U-boat approaching the convoy. The submarine attempts to slip beneath the Greyhound, but Commander Krause successfully sinks it with a full pattern of depth charges.

As they return to the convoy, another U-boat, marked with the emblem of a grey wolf, torpedoes a Greek merchant ship. The Greyhound is also targeted but, through careful maneuvering, evades the incoming torpedo. Reports from other escort ships reveal the presence of five additional U-boats, indicating that a wolfpack is lurking just out of firing range, biding their time for nightfall when visibility will be limited for the escorts.

That evening, the ‘grey wolf’ U-boat successfully torpedoes an oil tanker, using an underwater decoy device known as a pillenwerfer to evade depth charges. Commander Krause makes the decision to rescue survivors from the tanker before responding to the other ships in distress, which ultimately leads to the loss of another supply vessel. Meanwhile, a crew member from the U-boat, identifying himself as “Grey Wolf,” taunts the convoy and its escorts over the radio. As darkness falls, the wolfpack launches its attack, sinking three more merchant ships.
