Production on the film began in November 2020, originally with Jeff Nichols as writer and director. Although Nichols completed a script, he left the project in October 2021 to focus on other work, and Michael Sarnoski was brought on as his replacement in January 2022. Krasinski personally selected Sarnoski, impressed by his directorial debut, Pig (2021). Filming took place between February and April 2023, primarily in London, though the story unfolds in New York City.

The film premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 26, 2024, before its U.S. release by Paramount Pictures on June 28, 2024. A Quiet Place: Day One received positive reviews from critics, grossing $261 million globally. A co-production between Platinum Dunes and Sunday Night Productions, the film was produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, and Krasinski, who envisioned a fresh take on the series by focusing on the immediate aftermath of the invasion. Sarnoski drew visual inspiration from Children of Men (2006) to capture the apocalyptic atmosphere.

Nyong’o’s character, Sam, has a pet cat named Frodo. The actress, initially wary of working with cats, undertook “cat therapy” and ultimately grew fond of her feline co-stars, Nico and Schnitzel. Paramount originally suggested using a CGI cat, but Sarnoski’s commitment to realism led to using trained cats instead. The script originally depicted Frodo reacting fearfully to threats; however, the scenes were revised to avoid scaring the cats or relying on CGI.

Principal photography occurred in London, with Simon Bowles as production designer and Pat Scola as cinematographer, both of whom collaborated with Sarnoski on Pig. Sets depicting various neighborhoods in New York City were constructed on the backlot of Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, while certain scenes were filmed at London Charing Cross for subway sequences. Alexis Grapsas composed the film’s score, and Industrial Light & Magic handled the visual effects. With a budget of $67 million, A Quiet Place: Day One aimed to expand the series’ universe while exploring new perspectives on survival and resilience.

A Quiet Place: Day One Movie Story

Sam, a pessimistic, terminally ill cancer patient, lives in a hospice outside New York City with her loyal cat, Frodo. Her nurse, Reuben, persuades her to join a group trip to Manhattan for a marionette show, despite her reluctance. While in the city, the group witnesses strange, meteor-like objects streaking through the sky. Moments later, chaos erupts as creatures descend upon the gathered crowds, attacking anyone in sight. A creature strikes a loud ambulance, causing a massive explosion that leaves Sam unconscious.

When Sam regains consciousness, she finds herself inside the puppet theater with Frodo and a handful of other survivors, including a man named Henri, who gestures for silence. The quiet is broken only by the distant sound of helicopters, as military personnel broadcast warnings, advising everyone to remain silent and hidden until help arrives. Sam watches in horror as fighter jets bomb the bridges connecting Manhattan to the outside world, trapping the creatures on the island.

Tension within the theater rises, and one of the survivors, overcome with panic, starts to shout. Henri struggles to silence him, accidentally killing him in the process. Later, the building’s power cuts out, and the emergency generator roars to life, drawing unwanted attention. Reuben rushes to shut it off, but as he does, the sound of tearing fabric catches the attention of a nearby creature. It attacks him before he can escape.

Devastated, Sam clings to Frodo and decides to flee north towards Harlem. As she moves through the city, the military announces an evacuation plan, directing civilians to South Street Seaport, as the creatures cannot swim. Desperate survivors flood the streets, but the noise of the crowd attracts the creatures, sparking a deadly stampede as people fight to escape the slaughter.
