Among Disney’s live-action remakes, it ranks as the sixth-most-expensive production and the third-highest-grossing adaptation. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its music, costume design, direction, and the performances of Smith, Massoud, and Scott. However, it faced criticism for its CGI effects, pacing, and the portrayal of Jafar by Kenzari.

Aladdin Movie Story
In the vibrant, fictional city of Agrabah, a young orphan named Aladdin, along with his mischievous monkey, Abu, crosses paths with Princess Jasmine, who has secretly left the confines of her palace. Jasmine longs to lead her people as Sultan but is instead pressured to marry a royal suitor. Meanwhile, Jafar, the power-hungry royal vizier, plots to overthrow the Sultan. He seeks a magical lamp hidden in the Cave of Wonders, but only “the diamond in the rough” can retrieve it. While sneaking into the palace to visit Jasmine, Aladdin and Abu are captured by Jafar. Jafar promises Aladdin riches beyond his imagination if he retrieves the lamp from the Cave of Wonders. Inside the cave, Aladdin frees a magic carpet and discovers the lamp. However, after handing it over, Jafar betrays him, leaving Aladdin and Abu trapped inside the cave. Fortunately, Abu manages to steal the lamp back before they are sealed inside.
While trapped, Aladdin accidentally rubs the lamp, summoning a powerful Genie who offers to grant him three wishes. Cleverly, Aladdin manages to escape the cave without using a wish, thanks to a technicality. Eager to impress Jasmine, he uses his first official wish to transform into “Prince Ali of Ababwa.” He also promises to use his final wish to free the Genie from servitude and turn him into a human. Aladdin arrives in Agrabah with a grand royal procession as Prince Ali but finds it difficult to win Jasmine’s favor. Meanwhile, the Genie, disguised as Aladdin’s human attendant, develops feelings for Jasmine’s handmaiden, Dalia. Aladdin and Jasmine grow closer after a magical carpet ride, but when Jasmine starts to suspect his true identity, Aladdin lies, claiming that he is a prince who occasionally disguises himself as a commoner to explore the city.
Aladdin Movie Review
Visually, Aladdin is vibrant and dazzling. The colorful sets, from the bustling streets of Agrabah to the opulent royal palace, and the CGI-heavy sequences, like the magic carpet ride, create a visually immersive experience. However, some of the CGI, particularly with the Genie, received mixed reactions, with some viewers feeling it didn’t always blend seamlessly with the live-action elements. The film’s pacing is generally good, although some critics felt that it dragged in parts, particularly during its longer runtime compared to the original. Marwan Kenzari’s portrayal of Jafar, while competent, lacked the menacing edge that the animated version brought to life, making him one of the film’s weaker elements.
In terms of music, the movie retains many of the classic songs from the original film, like “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me,” while adding fresh arrangements that fit the live-action format. The musical sequences are fun and energetic, adding to the film’s overall charm. Aladdin (2019) is an enjoyable and visually captivating film that successfully modernizes the story while retaining the magic of the original. While not perfect, it strikes a balance between honoring the animated classic and offering something new, thanks in large part to its strong cast, especially Smith, Scott, and Massoud.
