Darker than Black (Japanese: Darker Than Black ー黒の契約者ー, Hepburn: Dākā Zan Burakku ーKuro no Keiyakushaー, “Darker than Black: The Black Contractor”) is a Japanese anime television series created and directed by Tensai Okamura and animated by studio Bones. The series aired 25 episodes on MBS, TBS, and their affiliated stations from April to September 2007. Set in a world transformed by the appearance of a spatial anomaly known as “Heaven’s Gate” in South America and subsequently “Hell’s Gate” in Tokyo, the series depicts a landscape altered dramatically, giving rise to individuals with supernatural abilities, referred to as Contractors. The narrative follows agent Hei and his comrades from the Syndicate organization as they navigate this altered version of contemporary Tokyo, seeking to uncover the mysteries surrounding Hell’s Gate. Darker than Black has been adapted into two manga series serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Asuka and Square Enix’s Young Gangan. Additionally, a sequel titled Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor aired for twelve episodes from October to December 2009, where Hei trains a new Contractor, Suo Pavlichenko, while searching for his former ally, Yin. The original series also includes original video animations, Darker than Black: Gaiden, which delve into the relationship between Hei and Yin during the gap between the first and second seasons.
