Fullmetal Alchemist (Japanese: 鋼の錬金術師, Hepburn: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi, lit. “Alchemist of Steel”) is a Japanese manga series created by Hiromu Arakawa. It was serialized in Square Enix’s shōnen manga anthology Monthly Shōnen Gangan from July 2001 to June 2010, with the individual chapters later compiled into 27 tankōbon volumes. The series is set in a steampunk world inspired by the European Industrial Revolution and follows the journey of two alchemist brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, as they search for the philosopher’s stone to restore their bodies after a failed attempt to resurrect their mother using alchemy.

Fullmetal Alchemist has been adapted into multiple anime formats, including two television series released in 2003 and 2009, and two films released in 2005 and 2011, all produced by Bones. Additionally, the franchise includes light novels, original video animations (OVAs), video games, supplementary books, a collectible card game, and a wide range of merchandise, including action figures. A live-action film based on the series premiered in 2017, followed by two sequels in 2022. Fullmetal Alchemist is set in the fictional country of Amestris (アメストリス, Amesutorisu), where alchemy is a widely practiced science. State Alchemists (国家錬金術師, Kokka Renkinjutsushi) are government-employed alchemists who hold the military rank of major. Utilizing patterns known as transmutation circles, these alchemists can create nearly anything they desire. However, this process is governed by the Law of Equivalent Exchange, which states that they must provide something of equal value in return. The transmutation of humans and gold is strictly forbidden. Attempts at human transmutation have never succeeded; those who try often lose a part of their body, resulting in an inhuman mass.

Individuals attempting human transmutation face a confrontation with Truth (真理, Shinri), a pantheistic, God-like entity who regulates all uses of alchemy and tauntingly challenges those who are arrogant. The appearance of Truth is nearly featureless and varies based on the individual encountering it; it is often viewed as a personal God that punishes hubris.Those who attempt human transmutation are also thrown into the Gate of Truth (真理の扉, Shinri no Tobira), where they receive an overwhelming influx of knowledge, granting them the ability to transmute without using a circle. Every living being possesses its own Gate of Truth, and according to the Gaea hypothesis, celestial bodies like planets also have their own Gates.
