Lonely Planet Movie Story

Katherine Loewe, a successful and well-respected writer, arrives at a Moroccan resort to complete her latest novel. Normally prolific, Katherine finds herself struggling this time, distracted by a painful separation from her longtime partner, who is pressuring her to move out of their shared home. At the same resort, finance manager Owen Brophy has joined his girlfriend, Lily Kemp, a rising star in the literary world whose debut novel has seen critical and financial success. Though thrilled by her achievements, Lily feels intimidated around the famous writers attending the retreat, so she asks Owen to come along for moral support.

As Katherine searches for a quiet place to work, Lily is warmly welcomed by the retreat’s other writers, especially Rafih Abdo, an admirer of her work who encourages her to make the most of this opportunity. Meanwhile, Owen feels like an outsider; Nobel Prize-winning author Ada Dohon singles him out for her sharp, biting criticisms, and his demanding job keeps him tethered to high-stakes phone calls, made all the more stressful by a five-hour time difference.

One evening, Katherine’s room has a plumbing issue, and while wandering the resort in search of water, she runs into Owen, who is lost in the dimly lit corridors. He helps her find her way back, and a quiet connection forms between them. The next day, while Lily and the other writers stay behind to talk to a visiting reporter, Owen and Katherine take advantage of a pre-arranged excursion to a nearby town. They spend the afternoon bonding over shared insights on travel, culture, and the weight of their personal lives.

Lonely Planet Movie Review

Going into Lonely Planet, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and for the first two-thirds of the film, it felt like a bit of a shallow story. However, as the plot progressed, I realized it was more than just a love story. It was about two young adults navigating their understanding of love, life, purpose, and the role of money in happiness. The movie explores themes of finding someone who truly understands you, allowing yourself and others to be authentic, and discovering what truly matters in life—especially the pursuit of love and a shared purpose.

At first, I struggled with a particular scene where Owen is on a call with his bosses, who pressure him to convince a friend to step down as CEO for the sake of money, which would also benefit Owen financially. Owen begins questioning the pursuit of wealth and what truly brings happiness. I didn’t fully catch that this moment was about a deeper questioning of whether money is the ultimate goal in life, especially as Lily, whose first book has brought her financial success, hasn’t yet begun this internal struggle. Katherine, on the other hand, is a bit cold and detached, but she’s grappling with what drives her creativity. Though she’s seen as highly successful, she’s still working through her own purpose and understanding of what truly matters.
