Since its debut, ONE PIECE has aired over 1,100 episodes and has been distributed to numerous countries worldwide. In North America, 4Kids Entertainment acquired the licensing rights on June 8, 2004, contracting Viz Media for home video distribution. The 4Kids adaptation included a new background score and a theme song known as the “Pirate Rap.” Due to content and length restrictions, the first 143 episodes were condensed into 104 episodes. ONE PIECE premiered in the United States on September 18, 2004, as part of the FoxBox TV weekend programming block, later moving to Cartoon Network’s Toonami action block in April 2005. It also featured in other programming line-ups, including Miguzi and prime-time slots. However, production was halted in 2006 after episode 143/104, and Viz Media discontinued its home video releases after volume 11.In a July 22, 2010 interview with Anime News Network, Mark Kirk, 4Kids Entertainment’s senior vice-president of digital media, explained that the company acquired ONE PIECE as part of a package deal without screening it first. Once they realized the series was not suitable for their target demographic, they edited it to be more child-friendly until they could legally drop the license. Kirk noted that the experience significantly damaged the company’s reputation, prompting 4Kids to implement stricter guidelines for acquiring anime in the future.
