The film’s script is based on a play Bong wrote in 2013, which he later adapted into a 15-page film draft. Han Jin-won further divided it into three drafts. Bong was inspired by the 1960 Korean film The Housemaid and the infamous 1930s Papin sisters incident. Filming took place from May to September 2018, with cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, editor Yang Jin-mo, and composer Jung Jae-il contributing to the project.
Parasite premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, where it made history by becoming the first Korean film to win the prestigious Palme d’Or. It was released in South Korea on May 30, earning widespread acclaim for Bong’s direction, the screenplay, editing, production design, and standout performances by the cast. With a modest budget of $11.4 million, the film grossed $262 million worldwide.
The film went on to win several prestigious awards, including four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. This made Parasite the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is one of only three films to have won both the Palme d’Or and the Academy Award for Best Picture, achieving this milestone for the first time in over six decades. Additionally, it won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, and became the first non-English-language film to win the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Parasite is now widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
In October 2022, a television series based on Parasite was in early development. The concept for the film dates back to 2013, when Bong, while working on Snowpiercer, was encouraged by a theater actor friend to write a play. Drawing from his own experience as a tutor for a wealthy family’s son in his early 20s, Bong considered turning it into a stage production.

Parasite Movie Story
The Kim family lives in a cramped semi-basement flat in Seoul, struggling to make ends meet with low-paying jobs. Min-hyuk, a university student, gives them a scholar’s rock, which he claims will bring wealth. Before leaving for studying abroad, he suggests that Ki-woo, the Kims’ son, pretend to be a university student and take over his job as an English tutor for Da-hye, the daughter of the wealthy Park family. With the help of his sister Ki-jung, who creates a fake university certificate for him, Ki-woo successfully lands the tutoring job, posing as a student from Yonsei University.
The Kims hatch a plan to infiltrate the Park family’s household by securing jobs for each of them. Ki-woo recommends Ki-jung, disguised as “Jessica,” as an art therapist for Da-song, the Parks’ young son, who is traumatized after seeing what he believes is a “ghost” in the kitchen. Ki-jung frames Yoon, the Parks’ chauffeur, by making it appear as though he had a sexual encounter in the car, leading to his dismissal. She then suggests her father, Ki-taek, as Yoon’s replacement. Meanwhile, the Kims exploit the long-time housekeeper Moon-gwang’s peach allergy, making Mrs. Park believe she has tuberculosis, which results in Chung-sook, the Kim matriarch, being hired to replace her.
As Ki-woo secretly begins a romantic relationship with Da-hye, the Kims enjoy the luxuries of the Park family’s home. However, their deception unravels when Moon-gwang unexpectedly shows up at the house while the Parks are away on a camping trip. She tells Chung-sook she left something in the basement, and when they go to investigate, they discover a hidden underground bunker. The bunker was built by the previous homeowner, an architect too embarrassed to inform the Parks of its existence. Inside, they find Moon-gwang’s husband, Geun-sae, who has been hiding there to escape loan sharks. Geun-sae was also the “ghost” Da-song saw, attempting to sneak out of the bunker to steal food from the Parks’ fridge.
Parasite Movie Review
Filming a movie is much like painting a picture—it requires time, effort, and attention to detail. Parasite is a prime example of this, with the filmmakers showcasing their exceptional craft throughout the production.
Directed by Bong Joon-ho, who is also known for his work on The Host (2006), Snowpiercer (2013), and Okja (2017), Parasite is a South Korean black comedy crime thriller that first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. There, it won the prestigious Palme d’Or, and it went on to make history as the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. This achievement is a testament to the film’s brilliance.
The story centers on the Kim family, a poor, unemployed household. Their son, Ki-woo, is hired to tutor the daughter of the wealthy Park family. As the Kim family tries to infiltrate the Park household, each member adopts a false identity in hopes of securing employment. While the plot might sound like something out of Pulp Fiction, Parasite is far more than that. It’s one of the most artistic films I’ve ever seen. The cinematography is striking and unique, resulting in breathtaking shots that stick with you long after the film ends. The acting is superb, and the story effectively tackles themes of class struggle and greed in a profound and impactful way.
