Perambu is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language film written and directed by Ram and produced by P. L. Thenappan under Sri Rajalakshmi Films. The lead roles are played by Mammootty and Anjali. The film’s music and soundtrack album are by Yuvan Shankar Raja, while the cinematography and editing are by Theni Eswar and Surya Pradhaman. The film depicts the story of a confused father, devastated after his wife leaves him, and struggling to provide for his daughter, who suffers from cerebral palsy, while constantly facing rejection from society.

Director Ram worked on the script for about six years and signed on for Mammootty in February 2015, but production was further delayed after the team finalized the cast and crew. Principal photography on the film began in January 2016. Filming took place in Kodaikanal and Chennai and was completed within a year. The film had its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam on 27 January 2018, at the Shanghai International Film Festival in China on 17 June 2018[3], and was screened in the Panorama section of the 49th International Film Festival of India. In India, it was released ahead of its scheduled theatrical release on 1 February 2019.

The film received widespread critical praise, with the acting of Mammootty and the rest of the cast, direction, screenplay and narration being praised by critics. The film won Best Film at the Tamil Zee Cine Awards and was nominated for ten awards at the Ananda Vikatan Film Awards, winning two, Best Film and Best Music Direction for Yuvan Shankar Raja. The film is included in the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) list of highest rated Indian films of 2019.

Peranbu Movie Story

The story of a single father Amudhavan and his daughter Papa is told in chapters.

Mr. Amudhavan works in Dubai and his wife Stella lives in India with their 14-year-old daughter Papa, who is dependent on him for daily living due to a muscular disease. One day, Stella writes a letter to Amudhavan asking him to take care of their daughter. She abandons her family and runs away from home, but Am returns to his hometown after 10 years to raise Papa as a single father.

Am finds it difficult to build a relationship with Papa as he has lived abroad with him for many years. Due to Papa’s health, they are shunned by their neighbours. They move into her brother’s house to live with his family and Amu’s mother, but her sister-in-law, irrationally fearing that her own child may be infected with Pappa’s “disease”, asks them to move out. Amu returns home with Pappa, where he constantly quarrels with the locals who want to force him to sell the house and leave the neighborhood. Pappa and Amu slowly begin to develop a bond. One night, when Pappa gets her period, Amu relaxes a panicked Pappa and seeks help from a woman named Vijaylakshmi. Vijaylakshmi (Viji) starts living with Amu and Pappa, offering her assistance in exchange for basic needs. Gradually Viji and Amu grow closer and get married. However, Viji’s motives for trying to kill Papa by pushing him into a well are revealed and he is stopped by Amu.

Set against a backdrop of powerful imagery, this poignant portrayal of the relationship between a helpless father and his disabled daughter will have you hooked from start to finish. This masterful film and the brilliant performances from Mammootty, Sadhana and Anjali (as Meera) forcibly draw you into their world and make you want to know them better. The essence of sexuality is explored beautifully and unpretentiously in a way that very few films have managed to achieve before. Sadhana definitely deserves a National Award for its brilliant yet challenging portrayal of Paapa and this is Mammootty’s best performance to date.
