The Marvels is a 2023 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics series. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is a sequel to the film Captain Marvel (2019) and the television miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022), and the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Nia DaCosta and co-written with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and also stars Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapoor, Sagar Sheikh and Samuel L. Jackson. In the film, Danvers, Rambo, and Kamala team up as “The Marvels”, swapping places whenever they use their powers.

Marvel Studios announced plans for a Captain Marvel sequel in July 2019. Development began in January 2020, when McDonnell was hired following her work on the television miniseries WandaVision (2021). Larson was set to return as Danvers from the previous film, and DaCosta was hired to direct in August of that year. In December, it was announced that Paris would reprise her role as Rambo from WandaVision, while Vellani would return as Kamala from Ms. Marvel. Second unit filming began in New Jersey in mid-April 2021, and the title, referring to the three characters and their similar abilities, was revealed in early May. Principal photography began in July 2021 and ended in mid-May 2022. Filming took place at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, as well as in Los Angeles and Tropea, Italy. Karasik’s involvement was revealed during post-production.
Prior to the release of Captain Marvel (2019), star Brie Larson expressed interest in a sequel starring the character of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Producer Kevin Feige previously stated that there are plans to introduce Kamala into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after the release of Captain Marvel, as Kamala is inspired by Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Iman Vellani was later cast as Kamala in the Disney+ -TV miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022) cast. In March 2019, Feige stated that Marvel Studios had “pretty great” ideas for a sequel, which could be set in the same 1990s as the first film, or in the present day. Lashana Lynch has expressed interest in reprising her role as Maria Rambeau in a sequel, albeit set in the present day.

Carol Danvers destroys the Supreme Intelligence, the artificial intelligence that leads the Kree Empire. This leads to a civil war on the Kree home planet Hala, which destroys Earth, rendering it barren for the next 30 years as it has lost air, water, and sunlight. The Kree come to know Danvers as “the Annihiler”.
The new leader of the Kree, Durven, discovers one of two legendary quantum bands that were previously used to create a network that allows high-speed travel through space. She uses the tape to force open a new jump point connected to the network. The resulting anomaly affects the entire network, including a jump point near S.A.B.E.R., a space station operated by Nick Fury. Earth. Captain Monica Rambeau investigates a jump point near S.A.B.E.R., while Danvers investigates a new jump point opened by Dur-Ben. As they touch their respective jump points, Rambeau is transported to Danvers’ location, Kamala Khan with the other quantum bands on Earth is transported to Rambeau’s location, and Danvers is transported to Kamala’s home. The three use their different light-based powers to battle the Kree enemies and destroy Kamala’s home.
