The Silent Sea is a South Korean television series starring Bae Doona, Gong Yoo, and Lee Joon. Director Choi Han-young, with the help of writer Park Eun-kyo, produced the eight-episode series as an adaptation of the 2014 short film The Silent Sea. It was released on Netflix on December 24, 2021.The title “The Silent Sea” comes from the Sea of Silence on the moon. The story concerns a manned mission to retrieve samples from a lunar research base. The series is primarily science fiction, but also mixes genres such as thriller and mystery. It received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences. In December 2019, Netflix announced that it would produce a television series, The Silent Sea, an adaptation of Choi Han-young’s 2014 short film of the same name, with Jung Woo-sung serving as executive producer.

In the near future, Earth is suffering from extreme desertification, and strict measures are being taken to ration drinking water. Scientist Song Ji-an (Bae Doona) joins a team of handpicked elite soldiers on a mission to the moon. They are on their way to Bohai Station, an abandoned research facility where her sister died after an incident five years ago that killed 117 employees. The details of the incident are secret. Your mission is to retrieve a mysterious and highly sensitive sample. The team’s captain, Han Yun-jae (Gong Yoo), is a soldier in the space agency. Captain Ryu Tae-seok (Lee Joon) of the Ministry of Defense volunteers to be a member of the team.
At the lunar facility, Song realizes that the higher-ups have been spreading a ton of half-truths and outright lies about the mission, the facility, and the accident that killed the employees. The sample looks like water, but it is composed of a new element that grows like a virus when it comes into contact with living cells. At the space station, the team is attacked by a violent superhuman girl who is immune to the effects of lunar water. At the same time, they must contend with the fact that some members of their own party may have ulterior motives that could lead to betrayal.
The Silent Sea Review
It was a very good and unique show (to me it felt like a mix of the movie Alien and the TV series Helix) and the actors were amazing. I can’t find enough words to congratulate them on their performance. They took their roles really seriously and each one was totally immersed in their role. I’ve only seen that in Guillermo del Toro’s movies.
The show is about a possible future and some of the elements the story is based on are already happening in the world today. The show offers a different perspective on possible solutions but also outlines the corporate and political greed that is very likely to occur in any situation.
