Train to Busan  Movie Story

Seok-woo, a cynical fund manager and divorced father, has an estranged relationship with his daughter, Su-an. When he sees a video of her attempting to sing “Aloha ʻOe” at her recital and succumbing to stage fright due to his absence, he is filled with guilt. In an effort to make up for it, he agrees to take Su-an to Busan for her birthday to visit her mother, Na-young. They board the KTX 101 train from Seoul to Busan, accompanied by a diverse group of passengers: Sang-hwa and his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong, CEO Yon-suk, a high school baseball team with player Yong-guk and his cheerleader girlfriend Jin-hee, elderly sisters In-gil and Jong-gil, and a homeless stowaway hiding in the bathroom.

Before the train departs, an infected woman boards unnoticed and soon transforms into a zombie, attacking a train attendant, who then becomes infected. The virus spreads rapidly through the train. The survivors retreat to a locked car and learn from reports that the epidemic is spreading south. At Daejeon Station, they find the city overrun with zombies and retreat back to the train, but the chaos separates them. Seok-woo learns that his company is indirectly linked to the disaster. The military sets up a quarantine zone near Busan, and the train continues its journey toward safety.

Seok-woo, Sang-hwa, and Yong-guk – now separated from their loved ones – fight their way through the horde of zombies to reunite with Su-an and Seong-kyeong, who are hiding with In-gil and the homeless man. After regrouping, they make their way to the front of the train, where the remaining passengers are sheltered. At the urging of Yon-suk and train attendant Ki-chul, the passengers refuse to let them in, fearing they are infected. In a heroic act, Sang-hwa sacrifices himself to allow the others time to break through and enter the car, though In-gil is killed in the process.

Train to Busan  Movie Review

“Train to Busan” is an intense South Korean thriller that masterfully combines horror, suspense, and unexpected emotional depth. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the film follows a group of passengers on a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan, only to be thrust into chaos when a zombie outbreak rapidly spreads, turning their journey into a desperate battle for survival.

The film’s pacing is relentless, keeping viewers on edge as the virus quickly spreads from one train car to another. The claustrophobic environment of the train amplifies the tension, with limited escape routes and close-quarter combat, making every compartment a high-stakes battleground. The resulting scenes are both terrifying and thrilling, with characters showing incredible bravery in the face of horror.

What sets Train to Busan apart is its strong character development. At the heart of the story is a father (played by Gong Yoo) who must confront his past neglect and fight to protect his daughter. Alongside him are other memorable characters, such as a selfless husband, a determined pregnant woman, and a resilient high school baseball player, each contributing their own perspective to the narrative. These relationships add significant emotional weight to the film, making the audience deeply invested in each character’s fate.
