Windfall Movie Story
A wealthy CEO and his wife arrive at their vacation home only to discover a burglar inside. The CEO offers to pay him off and forget the whole incident without involving the police, but the burglar locks them in a sauna instead.
As the burglar heads back to his car, he spots a camera that he suspects is recording him. He returns to confront the couple and demands $500,000 in cash. The CEO contacts his assistant, who informs him that the money will be available the following afternoon.
Throughout their tense interactions, it becomes clear that the CEO and his wife are struggling in their relationship, despite his hopes of starting a family. Later that night, the wife confides in the burglar about her unhappiness, while he challenges her to stop viewing herself as a victim for marrying someone solely for his wealth.
The next day, the CEO speculates that the burglar might be a former employee laid off due to an algorithm he created to help companies downsize. As they talk, a gardener arrives to tend to the property. The CEO discreetly writes “Call 911” on the gardener’s sketch. The burglar notices and forces the gardener back inside, while both the wife and the burglar criticize the CEO for putting an innocent person’s life at risk.
Windfall Movie Review
The film is beautifully shot and effectively tells its story within a single location using a minimal cast. Each actor performed their role well, showcasing their versatility—I’m convinced that the film could still work even if the roles were switched. It would be intriguing to see remakes of this film with the same actors in different roles, like Jason Segel as the tech CEO; that could make for a fascinating series.
I did wish for a clearer explanation of the tech CEO’s “algorithm.” It had a “Black Mirror” vibe, which I enjoyed, but I would have appreciated more context to fully understand its implications. Without that background, it was challenging to truly dislike the tech guy.
Additionally, it felt a bit unrealistic that the house lacked more advanced tech or security features that could have facilitated an escape.
Overall, the film was highly engaging and full of suspense, but I think more context and explanation would have deepened my investment in the plot and characters.
